British or French

Apologies for no Monday interview, things are kind of busy round here.

Now that it has arrived, and it won't ruin the surprise, I can tell you about a recent bit of crafting. I wanted to make my friend, Sonia in France, a gift. I know she likes tea so making another tea cosy seemed like a nice idea. Sonia likes red and gingham, so that made the choice of fabric easy. Speaking of gingham, check out her cute pin cushions here.

In Search of Blossom

Firstly, to those of you who are new to this blog, I'd like to explain that I used to have a number of blogs. A few months ago I decided to bring all my blogs together into this space. This little story about blossom is the kind of post I would previously have put on 'Kites Are Fun' blog. I just wanted to explain why it's a little bit different to my usual kinds of posts.

Also, there is a giveaway at the end of the page for a small celebration!

*****************************************************************************************************************

I could feel that change was just about to happen. I could see it. Tiny little buds of green growth everywhere. It had been another week of wet, grey days. I knew that if I put some of those little buds in a jar of water I’d be able to have some spring growth on my desk. And so I went in search of blossom. I walked through the roads, in the rain, to my green space. I didn’t go my usual route along the canal; I went into the big open ‘woodland’ paths. It’s an industrial sort of area with old waterworks leaving huge slabs of concrete. But nature doesn’t mind and has made her home there.

I inspected trees and bushes to see which had the most potential within their buds. There weren’t any blossom trees, but I found a willow with big white fluffy buds covered in rain. Perfect. As I walked through the paths I could hear all manner of bird song. I stopped to try and see which birds where in the trees. I saw two woodpeckers flitting between the trees together, stopping to find grubs at each tree. I watched them for a little while with willow in my hand and then began my journey home.

We got a sunny day. I knew that real change was underway. Those tiny buds I had seen around the streets would be turning into blossom. As I sat and wrote my essays, the sun shone outside. I’d been watching a blossom tree in the church yard. I’d seen the pink buds during the grey and rainy week. Pink buds hanging down like droplets. I knew that there would now be flowers on it now. I opened the windows to let the breeze blow through. The sun was getting ready to set and I couldn’t let that sunny day pass by, without taking a look at my blossom tree.

I walked over to the church yard and there it was. A mass of beautiful, delicate, pale pink flowers. I went back twice in the week just to look at those flowers. Those flowers which every year bring me so much joy, for when I look at them, I know that spring has arrived.

In celebration of this being Today I Saw's 500th post I'd like to offer this little watercolour painting of blossom to one reader. Just leave a comment before Friday the 4th March and I'll choose a winner at random. Thank you for keeping me company for 500 posts!

I keep forgetting to tell you! I've ran out of postcards. I have a pile of drawn ones sitting here on my desk, so thanks for being patient if you're waiting to recieve one. Over the last couple of months there has been some new people following this blog. I thought it would be nice to offer a postcard to those people first, as a little 'welcome gift'. If you just started following this blog in the last couple of months and you'd like a Today I Saw postcard then send me an email to jillwignall{at}googlemail{dot}com

Please write Today I Saw as the subject title.
In the email please write your name and your postal address.
I'll make a note of the first 30 addresses and then update here when the list is full (if the list doesn't get full, I'll open it up to everyone)

Tiny Triangles

Before I start to tell you about what I've been sewing, I'd like to say thank you so much to the two kind people who bought two of the bunting from my shop. I was delighted! There is now only one left

And the commuting crafting quest continues! Here's teeny tiny versions for my recent love of sewing tshirts. This design comes from a T-shirt I made for Daniel a couple of years ago. He was pretty obsessed with triangles back then. I've searched to try and find a picture of him wearing it but I can't (which is strange because it's his fave and he wears it all the time). Here are some photos of the babygrows I've been working on.
Similarly to the previous Tshirts the fabric has been heat bonded on with a raw edge and then hand stitched onto to the Tee.
For both babygrows (do people only call them that in Britain?) I've used a mixture of vintage and modern printed cottons.
I think they'd look good on boy or girl babies. I tried to keep the colour schemes unisex.
Both the babygrows are now available in my shop.

Daydreaming of dresses...

...and an entire handmade wardrobe. Yes, recently I've been daydreaming a lot about making all my own clothes. I buy nearly all my clothes from charity shops, but my turn around is quite fast, as so often the clothes don't fit quite right or are slightly worn out. What if I made all my own clothes? All my skirts and trousers could be highwaisted! I could have chic bedwear! I'd wear big 50s style dresses to parties (and not just the same two I always wear)! It would be amazing! But oh yes, I am forgetting, that little factor called time. So maybe I should start with one project, before I commit myself to an entire handmade wardrobe ~ making a dress for my good friend's wedding.
Where I am working at the moment is in an area of London full of fabric shops (Shepherds Bush for you Londoners). Today I went into one and found this fabric which I instantly loved. The shop was full of gorgeous fabrics that Nigerian woman use for their traditional attire. It's printed and embossed. I think it's perfect for my dress.

One thing that encourages this homemade wardrobe idea is that I have a small suitcase full of vintage dressmaking patterns. Fifties and Sixties are my preferred styles, so, having these patterns means I woud be able to make most of my clothes. Above are the patterns I've picked out for the blue and white fabric. I like the full dress in 4491, with one of those big underskirts in 8117.

I have the best book for dressmaking and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is learning how to dressmake. Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. It has step by step instructions for everything, including how to alter a pattern to fit you exactly. See? I'm all set with everything I need. I could make all my own clothes, but first, let's see how I go with one dress.

Small stitches, small bunting

I know have 3 strings of bunting in the shop. Last week I showed a glimpse of my crafting lunch breaks and commute. I completed these 3 pieces of miniature bunting. My favourite is the navy one in the first picture, I love that Liberty floral print and I like how it matches the navy gingham.
You can see the bunting has been sewn together by hand. I like the little coloured stitches standing out on the binding, and the way they aren't perfect.
All the bunting has been made with a mixture of modern and vintage fabrics and most of the triangles were sewn together by hand on.
They where a fun little project to do whilst travelling. They fitted into my little sewing pouch and I could just get it out and do a bit of stitching (as soon as I had a seat on the tube!). Each one is available here.

Today 'Jamie Shelman' Saw

Today I am super excited to welcome Jamie Shelman to Today I Saw. I've been a fan of Jamie's art work ever since I saw her unique cat drawings through Pikaland, the illustration website, which Jamie is a contibutor for. I'm always impressed by how prolific Jamie is: if I'm not browsing one of her two shops, I find myself laughing out loud when looking her latest drawings on Flickr. Jamie is a very funny girl! You can check out her blog here. Jamie has kindly drawn her own (awesome) Today I Saw postcard and answered questions about her life and the things she sees. Take it away Jamie!

Could you tell us a little bit about your postcard and what you have chosen to draw?

I choose to draw the neighbors cat who forces his way into our room and demands to lay on the bed. to accommodate this we put down a sheet of plastic so his long black hairs don't create the instant nest that he sheds and leaves everywhere!

and have you decided who you'll send it to?
Someone we want to scare and disgust!

Jamie, please tell us what you see in the morning once you've got up.
I see bikes, tree branches and the cat that runs up to have breakfast with us every morning.

Your readers and I love your witty and clever drawings. Although they are often of cat and chick they have a very human element. Can you tell us anything you see that inspires your drawings?
Usually they capture our day to day activities or happenings, a transference of human thought and activity in cat form, I've always loved animals, cats especially, think I grew up carrying my cats around the house!

Jamie your cat drawings are my favourite cat drawings ever (I'm a cat lover). Do you have cats? If so, please tell us about them.

Every cat we've ever known has followed us like the pied piper and the rats, must be the spaghetti stink between our toes! The neighbors Nike has currently adopted us, could be the attention and stiff drinks we slip him ;D

Jamie, I remember when you ever so kindly sent me a bunch of your drawings after I sent you a postcard. I was delighted as I love snail mail and your art! Is snail mail a big part of your life? If so how.

I love snail mail! I love making things by hand and always have, receiving something physical made by someone else is still a rush! And I love receiving mail from all over the world!

Could you describe some of the things you see each day that you feel are important to you and your life?

My husband and best friend Tom! The giant trees outside our window, the birds and all the neighborhood cats :D

And finally, please tell us one thing you saw recently which stayed in your memory.
This amazing British family we saw at Eataly in NYC having coffee and their incredibly kind and thoughtful interactions with all those around them! Squeezing the arm of a father who was tending to his infant in a stroller (and obviously at pains juggling his child and coffee etc.) even bringing him the milk from the coffee bar, talking to the baby, such empathy, openness and kindness to all- something that seems so lacking of late and which the world desperately needs more of! (I thought that's it, we're moving to Britain!) :D

**************************************************************************************

Jamie, thank you so much for taking part. I really enjoyed your answers and hearing about which cats are in your life! I especially liked that a British couple had had such a positive effect on you. They must have been from Liverpool : ) Your drawing is brilliant as always! Thank you Jamie!

Around the flat

This week during the daily commute, I've been working on miniature bunting which I started a while ago. It's always nice to return to ideas and work on them. I've completed three bunting in a variety of olous and patterns. Today I was taking photos to put them in the shop and played around with where to take photos in the flat.

In the bedroom?

On the bird wall?

In the living room?

Or above the kitchen sink?
I decided the bedroom was the best spot and took photos of all three bunting in that spot. I hope to put all three in the shop tomorrow morning. Hope you are all enjoying your weekends.

Sewing moments

Just wanted to stop in and say I hope you are all enjoying your week. I have drawn Today I Saw postcards but haven't yet scanned them in. So for now I will share with you two quick snaps from my lunch break today. I've been sewing during the commute and in my break. I've been working on unfinished projects which I keep in a little suitcase next to my desk. Here are two 'projects' still in progress.

She loves pink and yellow

So I'm enjoying this new tshirt love of mine. I've actually been drawing tshirts in my sketchbooks for the last year or two and now I'm putting those ideas into stitch, so to speak. After I showed last weeks tshirts I got a lovely request to make a kids sized heart tshirt for a little girl. I was stitching the heart on my underground commute this morning and as the business men watched I hoped it was bringing a little cheer to their morning.

Through my letter box

There was a bit of a mix up with this weeks interview so I hope you don't mind but it's been rescheduled to next week. Instead you'll just have to listen to me bragging about my latest postal treats!: ) I've been really lucky recently. I love to receive post and in the last few weeks I've received a number of special parcels. I received this package from Geninne a few days ago. On the back she'd drawn another Today I Saw.
and inside was her beautiful artwork.

Recently, Margie sent me the prettiest Today I Saw painting. It's of the four seasons prints that Arounna and I made.

My lovely friend Karen made me this beautiful little bag. It had a letter inside telling me what she'd been up to. Karen uses an old non electric sewing machine, so she can be as precise with her stitches as possible!

A reader named Linda, who I had sent a postcard to, kindly returned the favour with one of her exquisite cards. You can see more of her designs here. They're so gorgeous!

and finally, in January, Nanou sent this wonderful bluey greeny themed package, which contained a little walnut pincushion, a handmade flower and this pretty card.
See, I have been really lucky! Thank you for all the wonderful snail mail, friends! Recieving all these pretty pictures inspires me to think about the wall above my desk ~ I'm sure I could make it look much more inspiring now!

Postcard: 4th February 2011

Here is yesterday's postcard. Next week I'll be working in a Nursery School on the other side of London, so the Today I Saw postcards may be few and far between. I'll try and scan any in (it'll be dark when I'm at home) to show you. I'll be in the Nursery School for the next month. But hopefully I'll manage to be in this space too : ) Just thought I'd better explain any disappearing acts! The good news is that I have an hour and a quarter commute each way, so I plan to do sewing in that time. See you on Monday when we'll be finding out about one of my favourite illustrators!

I heart you

Hello All! Thanks for a wonderful response to yesterday's tshirt. Your comments where wonderful and really encouraged me to make the next one, a patchwork heart tshirt! Both tshirts are now available in my NEW shop for $35 each. I changed my shop address, just because I didn't like the old name. If you would be interested in one of these tshirts in a larger size then just email and let me know.
I'll be back tomorrow with the latest postcards. Enjoy the start of your weekend all!
